Arnold Classic - Big Success

ARENA DISTRICT, OH - The Newark girls and the Columbus U12 Sting were a part of history today. For the first time, the Arnold Classic had hockey as a part of it's weekend festivities. And for the first time, an all girls game was on the docket.

"It was a great day for hockey," said Sting coach Leslie Walker. "All the girls played well and really enjoyed the experience."

The Sting and the Newark girls have met once before this season. The game was a thriller, with the Sting prevailing in the closing seconds. It looked early like today's game would be just the same. It may have been closer, but Molly Brumfield had a banner day notching a hat-trick and leading the Sting to a 6-3 win.

"Someone threw my their hat after the game," said Brumfield with a smile.

Newark opened the scoring with a great individual effort by a player in the high slot. She fired a quick wrister on the ice past sprawling goaltender Emma Titus.

"I was out of position on that first goal," Titus admitted after the game. "I should have had that one, I saw it the whole way. Oh well!" she said as she ran off with her friend and teammate Kaitlin.

The Sting battled back and scored the next 3 goals. Molly, Alex, Madison and Olivia had the goals on the afternoon. It was back and forth with end-to-end action. Newark has a great team.

Sting finish third in Skirmish

GOAL!! Maddy scores on her penalty shot!!!

The Sting faced 4 teams total today and came in 3rd place. The first game the Sting faced was the Thrashers and won 5 to 0. Katlyn played in net during the first two games: the Thrashers and the Blues. We did not win the blues game but that was ok because the Sting were still in the lead on the scoreboard.

In the other two games Emma played goalie. The Sting faced the Avalanche and won 4 to 0. But that all changed when the Stars stept on the ice one skate by another. The Sting were losing by 2 and then Madi had a penalty shot and scored! Then the Stars came back on a 2 on 1 and scored to make the score 3-1, Stars. And just when the the game was going to be over Alex took the puck and shot from the blueline and scored. There was .2 seconds on the clock; however the reffs said no goal. Our team did not make it to the championship game but we were all happy, anyhow.

The u12 Sting got a chance to play on the big ice of Value City Arena during the mens hockey game. They skated between the 1st and 2nd period. Sadly Emma the goaltender was home sick AGAIN SO SHE MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY! Thats me writing but much better and plan to be a tomorrows game. The girls skated 5 on 5 for ten minuets each period. There is no word SO Far.

More photos from Brantford game!

Thank you Brantford Ice Cats!!

The U12 Sting had quite the day of hockey today. Two games and more smiles than a person could count! They opened the day against the CAHA squirt Penguins, a formidable opponent with strong goaltending and tenacious skaters. The girls did well but seemed to be a bit more relaxed than the coaches would have liked, skating to a 3-3 tie.

The league game was exciting for fans and both benches. The highlight of the day though, took place six and a half hours later. On the docket? A team from... [gulp]... Canada.

That's right folks, Brantford, Ontario to be exact. The Ice Cats were in town and were so very kind to inquire about a friendly scrimmage. What fun.

"OMG they have their own bus!" said one of the Sting players from the locker room.

The hockey was awesome. We'll do a write-up tomorrow, but until then, enjoy these photos!
